    1.0 out of 5 stars I Don't Get It!!!, April 17, 2002
    Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein (Audio CD)
I just couldn't wait for this CD to be released and now I can't share all the enthusiasm I read about. I am highly disappointed because I consider it one of the most boring collections in years. There isn't one song in there that I haven't heard the original recording artist do better. I don't know what all the hoopla is about. I love R&H and BP, but this just doesn't cut it for me. (Reminds me of Julie Andrews and Ben Kingsley's recording of "The King and I". What a shame ... for all of us!)

Bernadette Peters gets it: in musical theatre the words are as important as the music. If you like your standards crooned like warm butter and spun silk, this may not be the cd for you. This incomprable musical theatre star gets to the heart of these classic songs and dispels the notion that Rodgers and Hammerstein shows are just fluffy musical-comedy.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo!!, March 19, 2002
This review is from: Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein (Audio CD)
Bernadette Peters is usually associated with Sondheim. And I loved her in Webber's Tell Me On A Sunday. This BP loves R & H is quite something.

Miss Peters' unique talent comes right through the "live" recordings. The phrasing is not practised like Miss Streisand would in her studio recordings. Mind, I do adore Miss Streisands' talents enormously. BP oozes fun and frivolity in some of the cheeky numbers like The Gentleman is a dope and Mr Snow.

Her guts and emotions are so intact for the performances of these songs here, that she sounds like she's in character on stage!! Only without the usual distractions of a live stage recording. Although at times, her voice is too forwardly placed, but it works as I listen to it again and again. She is right here on stage in my home!! Brilliant!

Miss Peters' rendition and choice of There is nothing like a Dame is rather audacious but appropriate. Do listen to this and enjoy what she is trying to say.... a howling, glaring, gutsy... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth Watching, December 25, 2005

As usual, movies like this are pleasant surprizes. The plot really didn't make much sense, as the whole "we are family no matter what" theme never really gelled. What makes this movie a keeper is the feast for the eyes of Vincent D'Onofrio, the feast of the heart-strings of Noah Wylie and the charm of Juliette Lewis. I am forever amazed at the talent of Mr. D'Onofrio, as I only knew him from Law & Order Criminal Intent. Now I keep coming across gems he's made, and each character is different and facinating. Kudos to a real actor!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good ensemble film, even ok if you hate family films, April 18, 1999
      By A Customer
This review is from: Crooked Hearts [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The cast features up-and-comers who have up-and-come, like Peter Berg (here Pete Berg), Noah Wyle, Joshua Jackson, and more. It also has Jennifer Jason Leigh doing her usual fine job with a limited part, considering she's second billing in the film. My favorite line is JJL's to Peter Berg (her boyfriend as the film unfolds) when he talks about how weird his family is. She replies "unlike you, I'm not intolerant of weird." Worth seeing, especially for JJL fans.

All the pieces come together in this film of complex intra- and interpersonal relationships. The story line, character development, directing, sets, and most of all acting are well balanced and of high quality so the mind is not pre-occupied with "what is wrong with this picture" thinking. Instead, the viewer can enjoy and engage with the film. "Crooked Hearts" is complex enough that subsequent viewings reveal new dimensions, so the investment in purchasing the DVD is a good value.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first. Still flawed, though., September 28, 2001
This review is from: Primary Suspect (DVD)
...P>A quick synopsis...I liked this much better than the first...the characters weren't as dull or paper-thin. There was more going on in this movie. It was not just "let's see how fast we can get to the next scene with guys in their underwear". The plot is flawed by silly dialouge, and bad direction. Not really a horror movie...it still delivers on a small level...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another homoerotic horror film from DeCoteau, August 18, 2001
        By A Customer
This review is from: Primary Suspect (DVD)
This is the second film in the "Brotherhood" series of low budget homoerotic horror films directed by David DeCoteau. I preordered it on the strength of the amazingly sexy stills and trailer I've seen. It looks as if this will be even more fun than the first Brotherhood. Cuter guys, more underwear scenes, two warlocks in the bedchamber with one woman, etc. By the way, if you're interested in the original entry in the series please be aware that there are several films with the same or similar titles. If you're looking for sexy vampires running around in their boxer briefs then you want the one directed by DeCoteau, who also made the infamous "Voodoo Academy".

This review is from: Primary Suspect (DVD)
A COP [WILLIAM BALDWIN] SEARCHES FOR THE MAN WHO KILLED HIS WIFE. SO WHAT. THIS MOVIE DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH ACTION AND ALL THE STUFF THAT GOES ON IS REALLY HARD TO PAY ATTENTION TO. PLEASE DON'T WASTE TIME GETTING THIS MESS. ACTION FANS DESERVE MUCH BETTER ENTERTAINMENT THAN THIS.
