Tucker & Dale vs. Evil [Blu-ray]

Product Description

Tucker and Dale are two best friends on vacation, who are mistaken for murderous backwoods hillbillies by a group of preppy college kids. When one of the kids gets separated from her friends, Tucker and Dale try to lend a hand, but as the misunderstanding grows, so does the body count.

Slapdash Scary Movie cycle aside, the slasher genre has proven fairly resistant to effective satire, mainly because the movies themselves already go so far over the top. (After Jason goes to space, where else can you possibly go?) Arriving amidst some monster film festival buzz, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil scores big laughs by slyly inverting the formula, casting the standard backwoods maniacs as bewildered everymen surrounded by accident-prone teens. While it may basically be a one-joke movie, it sustains that joke for a remarkably long time. Kicking off with an effective Blair Witch jab, the story follows Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine), two good-natured good ol' boys with aims of fixing up their rickety cabin in the woods into a vacation home. Before they've emptied their first six-pack, they find themselves besieged by a group of stereotypical college kids who start dying in increasingly bizarre ways around them. As the bodies stack like cordwood, the duo's obliviousness only grows. First-time director-cowriter Eli Craig clearly knows his subject material well, trotting out the skinny-dipping coeds and conveniently placed sharp implements with relish, particularly with a wood chipper that really should have received a supporting actor credit. Clever as the concept is, though, it wouldn't stretch nearly as far without the performances, most notably Labine as a Bigfootish idiot savant and 30 Rock's Katrina Bowden as a Final Girl fully aware of the situation's absurdity. Although the invention may sputter at times, Tucker & Dale provides enough amiable chuckles and ridiculous gore to satisfy even the snootiest genre fan. For the sequel, can we get them near a rocket? --Andrew Wright

Ever seen a horror movie with hillbillies in it? They're usually psychotic chainsaw-swinging inbred cannibal psychos who like to murder anyone who happens to drive by.

But don't expect any of THAT to actually appear in "Tucker & Dale Vs Evil," a clever black comedy that asks, "What if the HILLBILLIES were the innocent victims of the doomed college kids?" Tropes are inverted (or lampshaded), there's gore aplenty, and Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine make endearingly rough-hewn heroes.

West Virginia hillbillies Dale (Labine) and Tucker (Tudyk) have just bought a dilapidated little house out by a remote lake, and plan to spend some time fishing and drinking beer. They also end up rescuing Allison (Katrina Bowden), a college student who hit her head while swimming, and she soon finds that these seemingly terrifying hillbillies are actually kind, gentle and sometimes quite smart.

Unfortunately, Allison's friends get the wrong idea, and think that she's being... Read more

The set up is a lot like the recent installments of the Texas Chainsaw and Hills Have Eyes franchises or Wrong Turn. A group of college kids go camping in the woods. They're unnerved by the backwoods, hillbilly-chic locals. And, naturally, they suspect the worst of them. Perhaps for the first time in horror movie history, these kids assumptions were wrong.

Tucker (Alan Tudyk; A Knight's Tale, 28 Days) and Dale (Tyler Labine; Rise of the Planet of the Apes, TV's Mad Love) are two loveable, kind-intentioned idiots on a bro-mantic fishing trip. Their interactions with the campers are misconstrued such that they appear to have performed malevolent deeds. After nearly drowning, Tucker and Dale save Ally (Katrina Bowden; Piranha 3D, 30 Rock) of the girls. But when they pull her into their boat and yell "we have your friend" to the others, it is perceived that they "took" her and then cruelly goaded them. Naturally, when Ally regains consciousness, she thinks she's been... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Satire, September 21, 2011

This review is from: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Very infrequently do you see a movie that blends its satired source with comedy as well as Tucker & Dale vs. Evil has. When you find yourself laughing out loud as teenagers hurl themselves into wood chippers, impale themselves on tree branches or set one another ablaze you realize that the horror element is vastly outweighed by the ironic humor that the entire piece is littered with.

If you're comfortable with a little blood and a little cursing then this movie will be a surefire winner.

4.0 out of 5 stars INFERIOR UNRELATED SEQUEL TO THE FIRST TWO FILMS! STILL ENTERTAINS! 3 1/2 STARS!, January 31, 2008
This review is from: Invisible Man's Revenge [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is the final in the Invisible Man series of 3 films. By 1944 most of the Universal Monsters films were getting made on a very small budget and this last installment of the Invisible Man shows the same signs as the others, although not as bad. It's still a very entertaining film just a bit too contrived to take too seriously. The FX are pretty good but, most of the FX are parlor tricks and there are some wires showing here and there. It's a lot of fun and by this time in the series it's OK to laugh. This is available on DVD as part of the Invisible Man Legacy Collection along with 4 other films relating to invisibility. The DVD transfer is very good and there are some interesting extras included.

Rampaging Mummies seeking revenge, mad doctors, and Invisible men where just some of the horror and fantasy themes that Universal Studios had cornered the market in during the 1940's war years. Audiences weary of hearing about the latest horrible occurrences at home and overseas could very easily loose themselves in the complete fantasy of these movies at least for a couple of hours before returning to the sombre real world outside the cinemas. Universal's "Invisible Man", series in particular was a great success in the early 40's and was itself an offshoot from the studios much earlier success with its 1933 effort "The Invisible Man", starring Claude Rains which was based on the famous H.G. Wells novel. These 1940's followup efforts of course were not as prestigious as that 1933 effort however Universal had a way with making even their "B", films appear like expensive productions. Of course with the subject matter dealt with here the rather ordinary stories were always enlived by the... Read more

Unrelated to the other Invisible films by Universal and even using the same actor, Jon Hall, from The Invisible Agent. Griffin is a man who escaped from an asylum after killing two nurses (not shown) and finds that his partner in an African safari (who got a diamond mine there) got a bunch of money and Griffin wants it. And wants his daughter. After getting himself kicked out and nearly drowned, he finds his way to John Carradine's house, the mad scientist who has the invisibility serum.

It's great when Carradine opens the door and let's him into his house, with that leer and "You don't have a friend in the world, eh?" Carradine introduces him to his invisible dog and parrot and needs a human to experiment on. Once the formula works, Griffin beats him up and escapes, to use his invisibility in revenge against his partner.

Special effects are fair; not sure how they make him invisible (positive/negative film perhaps) and we can see a few wires here and there... Read more

The 1998 Broadway production of Cabaret is that rarest of revivals, one that feels like an utterly new show. Despite their incredibly familiarity, the songs of Kander and Ebb sound as lively and lascivious as ever, and the revised score augments the original with several tunes written specifically for the Oscar-winning 1972 film ("Mein Herr," "Maybe This Time"). In the central roles of deluded chanteuse Sally Bowles and the MC, respectively, Natasha Richardson and Alan Cumming have big pumps to fill; they successfully do so with distinctive flair, eschewing the ham-fisted tendencies of Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey to impart this complicated yet enthralling vision of 1930s Berlin with a fiercely individual spirit. --Kurt B. Reighley

5.0 out of 5 stars A new spin on a classic musical, July 7, 1998
        By A Customer
This review is from: Cabaret: The New Broadway Cast Recording (1998 Broadway Revival) (Audio CD)
The current Broadway revival of Kander and Ebb's 1966 musical CABARET is not entirely faithful to the original production. Some changes are based on Bob Fosse's 1972 film version, while others date from more recent revivals. Gone are the songs: "Meeskite", "Why Should I Wake Up?" and "The Telephone Song" and the film's "Money Money" has replaced the original show's "Money Song" - but we gain from the addition of "Mein Herr" and "Maybe This Time" from the film score, and "I Don't Care Much" cut from the original show during previews.

Natasha Richardson handles Sally's songs well - but not too well: You never lose sight of the fact that Sally is a second rate singer in a tacky Cabaret. John Benjamin Hickey isn't given a lot to do on the recording: Aside from a few lines of dialogue he shares but one duet with Ms.Richardson. Pity, as he seems to exhibit a fine singing voice.

The real star of... Read more

This review is from: Cabaret: The New Broadway Cast Recording (1998 Broadway Revival) (Audio CD)
I had heard a lot about Cabaret but until I discovered that Natasha Richardson and Alan Cummings had the starring roles, I never really felt tempted to hear it or really wondered what the production was all about. Now, to my despair, I have heard it but will continue to wonder what it is truly all about.

I have never seen a production of Cabaret being performed, to my utter regret. Especially now, after hearing this wonderful recording, I wish that I had had the opportunity. Richardson and Cummings display such tremendous talent on the recording alone that it makes the listener wish to view their performance on stage.

Cummings's Emcee is joyous and dark. He is, as another reviewer wrote, clearly decadent. But his decadence does not transgress the garishly cheerful atmosphere of the Kit Kat Klub. "Wilkommen" is without a doubt one of the most memorable tracks on this album and serves the dual purpose of welcoming both the visitors to the club as well as the... Read more

Right, so most people usually wait til they have seen the particular broadway show BEFORE picking up the disc. However, I thought it would be well worth it to do the reverse. Is it? You bet!

The usual problem with revivals is that everyone is on tetherhooks wondering, "Do we really need an update?" When you think of landmark musicals, the 1972 version with Joel Grey springs to mind. However, the new cast does the material justice.

Brit actor Alan Cumming does the (nearly) impossible of improving the Emcee. Rather, he brings his own vocal style, which comes across on audio. Tracks like "Wilkommen" and "Two Ladies" feature the mask that the Emcee shows to the world: "I run the world, and everyone else are my understudies". However, a track like "I Don't Care Much" shows him as he truly is: a person afraid to open the club doors and face the world.

Natasha Richardson puts her limited vocal range through its paces. Her Sally Bowles... Read more
