5.0 out of 5 stars The Aussie outback at its best with a thrilling musical climax, March 11, 2011
This review is from: Broken Hill (DVD)
Academy award winner Timothy Hutton headed down under and portrayed a very convincing grumpy passionate Aussie sheep farmer at odds with his musically gifted son. The way father and son came back together, separated and then reunited through music is heartwarming and realistic. The music is brilliant. The outback scenes are stunning. The drama that turns to romance between Luke Arnold (Tommy) and Spy Kids star Alexa Vega (Kat) is a treat. The plot moves steadily to a wonderful climax with plenty of subplots and subtle themes to keep you thinking and enjoying at the same time. Thumbs up to the writer, director, producer and cast. (What's with the horse on the DVD cover???? Tommy rides a motor bike not a horse. Whatever!?!?)

    5.0 out of 5 stars A must see!, May 18, 2011
This review is from: Broken Hill (DVD)
This film was utterly entertaining and a feel good movie as well. You will be rooting for the likeable and adorable main character Tommy who has big dreams that seem impossible to achieve given his circumstances. I promise that the ending will leave you smiling and feeling insprired.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful film with a message, June 22, 2011
This review is from: Broken Hill (DVD)
I loved this film. The music, the scenary, the filming was beautiful. It's a movie we enjoy watching over and over. Teens especially will relate but there is a message for everyone who has a family - which is all of us. Timothy Hutton is always worth the price of admission. Definately a winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Underappreciated Gem of a Show, August 22, 2009

Mary Wannagat "Writer" (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
        (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Raines Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
A witty, intelligent portrayal of a man's mind disintegrating due to a traumatic experience. That the man in question was portrayed by Jeff Goldblum was a bonus, as Mr. Goldblum is one of the few actors who could take such a serious subject and make it humorous and...all right, I'll say it--quirky. He is a quirky actor, and not for everyone's taste, but if you do enjoy his style, you'll enjoy Raines, because it's Jeff Goldblum at about his quirky best.

It's a shame the show had such a limited run, but it was (in my opinion) the victim of a disastrously inept advertising campaign that let people think it was just another show about a psychic detective who talks to ghosts. What people didn't understand was that the "ghosts" were only manifestations of Raines overstressed mind. The great joy of this show was watching the actors have fun weaving the imaginary characters in and out of the "real" action.

My favorite episodes were "Reconstructing Alice", which pitted... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Jeff, June 23, 2012
This review is from: Raines Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
Do you have to be a fan of Mr. Goldblum (and a woman) to enjoy this show? Don't know, as I am both, but I wouldn't think so. I don't generally like most crime shows - too much gore and twisted minds for my taste- but this one was so enjoyable and inventive. Very understated but excellent performances from an actor usually more overtly quirky. The dialogue is intelligent and stimulating, the scene photography interesting and the cast characters are also a notch above the usual fare.
It is a shame that NBC exec's have such low opinions of audience intelligence and viewing taste. Maybe they just didn't have the balls to stick with excellence over predictable, formula shows and the outrageously stupid drivel TV viewers are insulted by and assaulted with every evening.
Down with "staged" reality TV and up with Raines!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant!!!! One of the best shows that ever aired!!!, November 16, 2011
This review is from: Raines Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
A Big 5 Stars for this one!!!!
Raines is a clever, intelligently written and unique twist on cop dramas with some great laughs thrown in for the bargin. As a lifelong Goldblum fan, I consider this is his very best work and his most intriquing character!

Even the show's opening title credits sequence is inventive and well done. The opening shot in the pilot will have you hooked from the beginning- where during Jeff's narration explaining why he wanted to become a detective you watch the blending of a classic Hollywood movie image of a night time crime scene with a 1940's starlet lying next the swimming pool of a Hollywood mansion that slowly morphs into a daylight shot with a modern day male victim in her place.

To his dismay, Raines sees and interacts with hallucinations of the dead victims which appear to him from the moment he first sees them at a crime scene. But unlike "Medium" and "The Ghost Whisperer" these are not ghosts, they are only... Read more
